There are hundreds of agencies and commissions across the U.S. government, playing a wide variety of roles that affect both our professional and personal lives. In our cooperative federalist government structure, federal laws and institutions form the backbone of much of our system for addressing environmental challenges. Agencies play the leading role in this structure, administering and enforcing federal laws by spending congressionally appropriated funds, promulgating rules, and adjudicating specific cases. The purposes, history, and structure of these agencies can be complicated, and their importance is often not fully understood.
